REPORT BY THE EVENT CO-ORDINATOR, SIMON MORGANAfter a hectic summer everything is now progressing well for next year 16 Europeans, which I hope will match any event in recent years with our welcome and truly excellent sailing conditions. As many of you will know my team and I have been anticipating this event for 3 years now and everyone concerned with the event from the Mayor of the island to the guys making cocktails along the harbour are eagerly awaiting your participation. The sailing conditions that are typical here are going to challenge anyone – in the mornings there’s a predictable on-shore breeze Force 1-3. Then about lunchtime the wind stops, has lunch itself and then kicks back with a wicked little cross-shore Force 5-7 most afternoons. And sunshine is guaranteed! After discussions with the EHCA President and Committee it has been decided that for this Championships only we are going to hold the Women’s, Masters and Youth Championships together with the two days of Qualification Series which will start no earlier than 10.30 am on Monday 2nd July. Thus the Qualification Series, the Womens, Masters and Youth’s Championships will be held over 7 races on Monday 2nd and Tuesday 3rd July, and the Gold and Silver fleets then racing in a series up to 15 races from Wednesday 4th until Saturday 7th July. The official ‘Notice of Race’ will be available shortly on line. We highly recommend registering your interest in this event as early as possible. We are going to limit the racing to 2 fleets of 64 boats and from the current level of interest we expect that each one of these places will be filled. This web site has now been updated to give all current information on travel arrangements including travel subsidies for competitors bringing their own boats, possible boat pick up dates for teams in Germany, UK and Northern France and package arrangements for those wanting to rent a limited number of rental boats.
It also has information and contacts for flights and accommodation and links to Lefkas related sites.
I know that if the Greek God of wind sees fit to provide you with his pleasures you will experience the ultimate in Hobie 16 sailing in an environment that’s ideally suited to a true Championship atmosphere – never mind the sun, wind, flat water, babes, beautiful mountains, late night cocktails, all night bakeries, bands playing on the beach, langoustines,moussaka,….
My only sadness is that I will be working for you and not racing against you, nor will any member of the Wildwind team or the dozen supporters from the Toronaiaos Sailing Club of Thesaloniki who will be working with us to make this the first ever Hobie Cat European Championships in Greece a memorable success.
So we’ll see you at the Worlds in New Caledonia in 2002!

TRANSPORT and TRANSPORT SUBSIDIESClick here for FlightsAt present we can offer two transport alternatives for you and your boats. Vassiliki is on the island of Lefkas, and is surprisingly easily reached by road and by air. If you are coming by road then you will be taking a ferry from one of the Italian ports of Brinidisi, Bari, Ancona, Venice or Trieste and a 8 to 30 hour crossing to the Greek port of IGOUMENITSA. From Igoumenitsa it is 100 km to the town of Prevesa and its airport, and a further 50 km to Vassiliki. |
Bringing Your Own Boat. We aim to make this the least expensive option for most competitors. As well as ½ price fares on SUPERFAST ferries from Italy to Greece, we will give you a travel subsidy of up to 350 Euros depending on distance from Ancona. If you double stack your boats this is a really inexpensive option. For example if you take 4 people, one car and 2 boats from Munich your expenses will be about: |

Munich – Ancona distance 1500 km round trip Igoumenitsa – Vassiliki 300 km round trip Petrol and tolls approx 400 Euros 4 passengers 1 car 1 trailer return Ancona - Igoumenitsa 640 Euros 2 x travel subsidy 200 EU -400 Euros Total travel bill 600 Euros ie 160 Euros each!! If you bring your own camping equipment or caravans your costs are minimal. |

| RENTING A BOAT There are a limited number of rental boats available from Wildwind and from Hobie Europe. For logistical reasons we have to offer these boats in an inclusive package including accommodation, and for persons coming from the UK, with flights as well. Some 20 are being set aside for competitors from the UK and from otherwise inaccessible areas. Some 10 boats are being set aside for competitors who will finish the Tiger
Worlds in Garda on Saturday June 30th and will just make the start of the
second race of the Qualification series. These will include competitors from
Brazil, SA, USA AUS.

PACKAGE ARRANGEMENTS For UK competitors, flight from London Gatwick, transfers to and from
Prevesa airport, one or two weeks accommodation at or close to the Wildwind
centre, rental of boat for the Championships, and optional windsurfing
package. The simplest one week package including flight will be priced
at £629 per person. |
